(CNN) – People who receive money from the federal government only have a couple of weeks left to make sure to get it digitally.

The Treasury Department plans to stop issuing paper checks for most payments on Sept. 30, which includes social security beneficiaries.

This move is part of the Trump administration’s effort to fully modernize federal benefit payments, save money and fight financial fraud.

More than half a million social security recipients, less than 1%, need to choose another way to receive their social security benefits. This can be either direct deposit or through a pre-paid debit card, known as Direct Express.

If you still need to receive a paper check, you can request a waiver. Some exceptions will be made for those who are over 90 years old, have a mental impairment, or live in a very remote location.

You can apply for a waiver at the website godirect.gov.
