gobison.com The North Dakota State men's basketball team cut a 16-point deficit down to three points in the second half, but Fort Wayne held on for a 77-71 victory in Summit League play at the Gates Sports Center on Saturday evening.
IPFW (9-11, 2-5 Summit) opened up a 16-point lead at 49-33 with 13:49 remaining, but NDSU responded with a 10-0 run to trim the margin to six. The Bison eventually pulled within three points at 63-60 with four minutes left, following a jumper by Paul Miller and a three-pointer from A.J. Jacobson.
The Mastodons' Mo Evans converted a three-point play to push their lead back to 66-60, and NDSU never got closer than four points the rest of the way.
NDSU (13-7, 5-2 Summit) had four players in double-figure scoring, led by Jacobson with 17 points. Lawrence Alexander scored 16, Miller had 14, and Kory Brown added 10. Brown also led the Bison with six rebounds and three assists.
IPFW shot 51 percent in the game, while NDSU shot 48 percent. The Bison made 10-of-24 attempts from three-point range, led by a 4-of-6 effort by Jacobson from beyond the arc.
The Mastodons had six players score in double figures, led by 16 points from Max Landis.
Alexander passed Ben Woodside for the NDSU career record in minutes played. Through 118 career games, Alexander has played 4,130 minutes. Woodside totaled 4,117 minutes in the same number of games.
NDSU returns home to play Denver on Thursday, Jan. 29, at Scheels Arena.
