A 16-year-old arrested in the murder of a Moorhead man has been formally charged in Clay County Court.
Zachary Daniel St. Claire has been charged with 1st degree premeditated murder in the death of 55-year-old Bradley Carrington. At his first court appearance on Tuesday, St. Claire was visibly distraught. The judge asked him to look up, and talk louder.
Bond has been set at $750,000. The prosecution asked for 1-million dollars due to the violent nature of the crime and the public's safety. However, the defense asked to lower the bail, saying "he's 16, he lives at home with his mother."
This type of charge moves St. Claire into adult court, and carries a maximum of life in prison without parole. Three members of St. Claire's family were in the courtroom and left crying.
During an interview with investigators, St. Claire reported he had been molested by Carrington for the past three to four years.
Court documents say St. Claire admits he had thought about and planned out the idea of killing Carrington in the past. On Saturday night, St. Claire says he had drank some alcohol with Carrington and saw an opportunity to kill him.
St. Claire told investigators he punched Carrington in the face multiple times and kicked him in the head. St. Claire says once Carrington was dead, he went home, washed his clothes and threw his shoes into the river.
When officers arrived on scene at 1224 15th Avenue North in Moorhead on Sunday, they report finding a significant amount of blood. A detective says there was apparent trauma to Carrington's face and head.
The Moorhead Police Department is still looking for 20-year-old Anthony Rodriguez in connection with the death. His vehicle was located in Moorhead on Monday night. Police say Rodriguez knows he is wanted and you should not approach him. If you see him, call police immediately.
