Fargo, N.D. (Valley News Live) Straus Clothing is the oldest family-owned retail business in the upper Midwest. After 136 years in business, the owners announced on Friday they’ll be closing their doors.

John and Rick Stern, 4th generation owners of Straus Clothing in Fargo, announced their retirement on Friday. “Straus Clothing will be quitting business,” they said in a news release.

Straus Clothing was founded in 1879. John and Rick Stern say they have actively participated and owned the business for 45 years.

“The Sterns have decided to retire and liquidate all their stock of quality menswear with a huge sale. Straus will be closed in preparation for the sale, which will begin Thursday, November 19 at 9 am. Everything will be sold, “down to the bare walls.”

All the Stern brothers and sisters, from Minneapolis and California, are returning to Fargo to help, and will be in the store for the start of the sale. They all worked in the store as kids, and say they wanted to be together to begin this one last sale.

John and Rick want to extend their heartfelt appreciation to all the wonderful employees, customers, and friends who have been so loyal these past 136 years.
