BISMARCK, N.D. (MSUM Athletics) – Junior guard Jacky Volkert scored a career-high 24 points to lead the Minnesota State University Moorhead women's basketball team to a 64-54 win over the University of Mary in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference opener for both teams Friday in Bismarck, N.D.
MSUM is 4-1 overall and 1-0 in the NSIC while Mary fell to 4-4 and 0-2 in the league.
Volkert was 8-of-16 from the field and a perfect 7-of-7 from the foul line. She added five assists and three steals.
Sophomore forward Megan Hintz had 12 points for MSUM while freshman guard Kiley Borowicz had a career-high 10 points and seven rebounds. Senior forward Drew Sannes had 10 rebounds while senior forward Cassidy Thorson had nine points.
The Dragons, who have beaten the Marauders five straight times, trailed 26-25 at halftime. But the Dragons secured control by outscoring the Marauders 19-8 in what proved to be a decisive third quarter. Thorson had six points in that frame while Volkert and Borowicz each had four. MSUM held Mary to 25 percent shooting and forced six turnovers in the third quarter.
MSUM led by as many as 12 in the fourth quarter. Mary got as close as six in the final minute but a Hintz basket, followed by two foul shots by Thorson, iced the game for MSUM.
The Dragons play at Minot State on Saturday. Game time is 4 p.m. in Minot, N.D.
Steve d'Eustachio Stat of the Game: The Dragons have won the most recent game they have played against all other 15 of the NSIC schools except the University of Sioux Falls, who eliminated the Dragons in last year's NSIC tournament.
