SIOUX FALLS, S.D. – North Dakota State junior point guard Vinnie Shahid has been named the Summit League Newcomer of the Year for the 2018-19 men’s basketball season, it was announced Thursday.
Shahid (Minneapolis, Minn./Hopkins HS) is a junior college transfer from Western Nebraska CC. As the Newcomer of the Year, he also earned a spot on the league’s All-Newcomer Team and garnered honorable mention all-league recognition.
Shahid has started all 30 games for the Bison this season, leading the team in scoring with 12.6 points per game overall and 13.4 points per game in league play. He shot 39 percent from three-point range and 83 percent at the free throw line in conference games. Shahid also led NDSU in assists and steals.
Shahid posted six games of 20-plus points on the year, scoring a season-high 29 against Missouri Valley Conference co-champion Drake on Dec. 1 in Minneapolis.
Shahid joins Lawrence Alexander (2012) as the only Bison to be named Summit League Newcomer of the Year.
The No. 4 seed Bison will play No. 5 seed Oral Roberts in the quarterfinals of the Summit League Tournament on Sunday at 6 p.m. in Sioux Falls.
