UND turns attention to Sam Houston St.

GRAND FORKS, N.D. (Valley News Live) -- After losing to FBS top-ten Washington the University of North Dakota Fighting Hawks football team will turn their attention to FCS top-ten Sam Houston St.

UND Head Coach Bubba Schweigert said Monday that every week is a measuring stick for his team and he's not trying to put too much emphasis on playing the Bearkats.

But for UND, every week is like a playoff game so Schweigert is hoping the experience of playing Mississippi Valley St. and Washington will pay off Saturday against SHSU.

"You look at what you did well, what you can build upon and then where you need to improve. Some areas you need to improve a great deal, other areas you build upon. So that's this week," Schweigert said.

One of the bright spots for the Fighting Hawks in the 45-3 loss to Washington was running back John Santiago. Santiago rushed for 139 yards on 18 carries, eclipsing the 100-yard rushing mark for the third time in four games against FBS opponents.

"I kind of like being an underdog. I mean that's what fuels me and not only me, I feel like it fuels the team in general," Santiago said.

Santiago also said he's taking the same mentality he had leading up to Washington into this week.

"Every game is a huge opportunity and we've got to treat this game like any other game. We're going to go into it strong. We're going to prepare this week and we're going to take the coaching each day and I feel like we'll come out successful if we do that."
