GRAND FORKS, N.D. (UND Athletics) -- Top-ranked North Dakota set a new building record for consecutive home wins Saturday with a 5-2 victory over Alabama-Huntsville for its 13th straight win at the Ralph Engelstad Arena. The result also pushed UND's NCAA-leading unbeaten streak to 15 with its ninth straight win.
Matt Kiersted rocketed a shot from the point and senior Westin Michaud was there to deflect it past UAH goaltender Mark Sinclair just under five minutes into the game. Collin Adams made it 2-0 later in the period, part of his five-point weekend.
UAH would tie the score at 2- in the opening stages of the second period, but what transpired after that was a signature moment from Hobey Baker Award hopeful Jordan Kawaguchi. After Grant MIsmash wound for a huge slapshot, his shot squirted free along the redline to Kawaguchi to Sinclair's left. With no room to operate, Kawaguchi slid the puck--which was now behind the goalline-- between his legs and he roofed a shot over Sinclair for his career-high-tying 10th goal of the season and a 3-2 UND lead. It would stand up as the game winner, giving him five GWGs this season and eight for his career.
Early in the third, freshman Ethan Frisch scored his first career goal with a bomb from the point and a 4-2 UND lead. Shane Pinto, fresh off his appearance with Team USA at the IIHF World Junior Championships, potted an empty netter for the final.
Adam Scheel stopped 11 shots for his 16th win.
North Dakota continues its homestand next weekend, returning to National Collegiate Hockey Conference play, hosting Omaha on Friday and Saturday.
Notes: UND is 11-0-0 at home this season ... North Dakota's current 13-game home winning streak is the longest in the history of the new Ralph and ranks sixth-longest in school history ... Kawaguchi now has 28 points, two more than his team-leading total last season ... Ethan Frisch's goal gives UND 21 different goal scorers this season.
