FARGO, N.D. (Valley News Live) -- North Dakota opening the 2019 season on Saturday, hosting Drake for the first of eleven games on the schedule this year.
With just 11 games and no conference affiliation for the Fighting Hawks, there isn't much room for error if they look to cash in on their playoff goals. Head Coach Bubba Schweigert says the team has been aiming to not only not overlook opponents but not overlook each detail of their day.
"This game is really important for our football program," Schweigert said. "And opening games tell a lot about your team and reveal some things about your team and this is something we better be focused on."
Drake heads to Grand Forks with a new head coach and plenty of new players stepping up in key roles. The Fighting Hawks have their own list of unproven play makers though.
Including a new offensive coordinator. The Hawks have been putting pieces in place since spring ball opened to roll out new wrinkles and to generate a potent offensive attack.
Schweigert saying he's been pleased with the progress but eager to see it be tested during a game.
"I think our guys have really worked hard to learn it," Schweigert said. "I think they believe in it and now you have to go out and execute it on game day when it really counts."
Kickoff is set for 4 p.m. from the Alerus Center.
