GRAND FORKS, N.D. (Valley News Live) -- The University of North Dakota Football team will open the 2018 season Thursday night against Mississippi Valley State.

The Fighting Hawks and Delta Devils have never met on the football field, couple that with MVSU hiring Vincent Dancy this offseason, UND Head Coach Bubba Schweigert said Monday he’s not really sure what to expect.

"For us its really keeping the focus on UND,” Schweigert said. “That's what we've been preaching to our team. 'Hey we've got to execute our offense, defense, and special teams."

The Fighting Hawks have not opened a season at home since 2013. Schweigert talked about the importance of managing emotion during the game while feeding off the crowd. He also said his team needs to be disciplined and avoid mental errors that lead to penalties.

"Those things really help you in any game but especially in the first game. If you can avoid five yard penalties they really help you in the football game. So this is one thing that we've been preaching to our team and hopefully we limit those on Thursday night and gain an advantage in that area."

North Dakota (0-0) and Mississippi Valley State (0-0) will kick-off at 6:30 p.m. from the Alerus Center in Grand Forks, Thursday, August 31.
