Thome backstops UND to 4-1 win over third-ranked Bulldogs

GRAND FORKS, N.D. (UND Athletics) -- Freshman forward Mark Senden, for the second weekend in a row, scored on the first shift to help propel North Dakota to a win over a ranked team. This week, Senden's goal from a tough angle at 44 seconds gave UND a quick 1-0 lead and the Fighting Hawks downed third-ranked Minnesota Duluth, 4-1, at Ralph Engelstad Arena Friday evening in National Collegiate Hockey Conference play.

Despite UMD tying the game just 41 seconds later, North Dakota potted two more goals in the first period on tallies by Hayden Shaw (short handed) and Casey Johnson for a 3-1 lead. Cole Smith added a late goal in the final period for the 4-1 final.

Sophomore goalie Peter Thome started and got the win, facing 22 shots and turning 21 aside in his first regular season action since Nov. 30 at Minnesota Duluth.

The teams wrap up their season series Saturday night at the Ralph with the puck dropping at 7:07 p.m. Central time.
