Spuds head to Nordic State Meet
For the first time in the program’s history the Moorhead Spuds Girls’ Nordic team won the section championship and qualified for the state meet.
In addition to the Girls’ team going for a state title, individually, on the Boys’ side Jack Lee is the first Spud to qualify for back-to-back state meets.
Not bad for a program that started five years ago.
“It’s grown a lot from just my freshman year alone, having 30 people on the team to growing to this year we had just over 60,” Lee said.
Lee traded in his hockey skates for skis his freshman year and hasn’t looked back.
He’s ranked 46th in the state and after finishing sixth in the Section 8 meet last week he’s got his eyes primed for something more.
“My goal overall would be to become top 25 in the state to get that all-state certificate which would be super awesome,” Lee said.
After being the lone Spud last year at the state meet Lee is going to have company this year.
The Spuds Girls’ team is one of two teams from Section 8 to earn a spot as a team at the state meet.
Individually Freshman Abbie Ishaug took top honors.
“Last year none of us got in the top ten, so I think we’re really excited, well I’m really excited,” Ishaug said.
Ishaug said there are benefits to having teammates alongside especially before the races start.
“It’s important to have your team there because there’s more people there to know how you’re feeling because they’re all skiing the same thing. Before the race we get each other hyped up so I think we rely on each other a lot,” Ishaug said.
