GRAND FORKS, N.D. (UND Athletics) -- Six different players found the net in a dominating 6-2 exhibition win for North Dakota over. the U.S. Under-18 team at the Ralph Engelstad Arena Saturday evening.
UND took advantage of its first power play opportunity as Rhett Gardner buried a one-timer from the point on a feed from Jacob Bernard-Docker at the 3:14 mark of the first period.
Later in that frame, Ludvig Hoff jammed a back-hander in from his knees near the goal mouth for a 2- North Dakota advantage.
U.S. responded early in the second period as Matthew Boldy converted a turnover into a goal to cut the lead in half just 1:31 into the period.
The Fighting Hawks would tally two more goals before the end of that period, however, to take command. Casey Johnson blasted home a feed from Jackson Keane at 9:22 and Grant Mismash added a power play goal nearly three minutes later for a 4-1 home team advantage.
Collin Adams added a marker midway through the third then Gavin Hain added an empty netter for the 6-2 win.
Adam Scheel got the start in net, stopping 14 of 15 shots in the first two periods. Peter Thome came on to start the third and kicked aside 16-of-17 shots in just over 16 minutes of work while Ryan Anderson finished the final 3:44 of the win.
North Dakota returns to regular season action next weekend when it heads to Buffalo, N.Y. for its final non-conference series of the year. The two-game slate at Canisius is set for a 6:35 p.m. Central puck drop both Friday and Saturday.
