BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – A pair of North Dakota State women’s track & field athletes earned top-10 finishes in the shot put at the NCAA Indoor Championships on Friday evening.
Senior Bailey Retzlaff (Carrington, N.D.) placed eighth to earn first team All-America honors, and junior Shelby Gunnells (Solon, Iowa) finished ninth for second team All-American status.
Retzlaff and Gunnells were ranked 10th and 14th, respectively, entering the meet. Retzlaff registered a throw of 55-00.25 (16.77m) on Friday, while Gunnells’ top throw was close behind at 54-10.25 (16.72m).
Retzlaff joins Laura Hermanson, Leslie Brost, Erin Teschuk and Rose Jackson as the only five Bison women to earn indoor first-team All-America honors at the Division I level. The Bison women have now had seven top-10 finishes at the NCAA Indoor Championships in the past five years.
The pair rank first and second atop the NDSU record books in the shot put.
NDSU junior Maddy Nilles will compete in the weight throw on Saturday at 4:30 p.m.
