DES MOINES, Iowa (NDSU Athletics) -- Former North Dakota State NCAA champion thrower Payton Otterdahl finished sixth in the shot put at the USATF Outdoor Championships on Friday night.
Otterdahl threw 67-09.75 (20.67m) for the highest USATF national meet finish of his career. The top three finishers automatically qualified to represent Team USA at the 2019 World Championships in Doha, Qatar.
Alex Renner, an NCAA All-American for the Bison in 2016 and 2017, placed 16th in the shot put with a mark of 64-02.50 (19.57m). Two years after completing his collegiate career, he posted a lifetime-best mark of 65-07.00 (19.99m) this summer to qualify for the meet.
With the top three finishers on Friday – Ryan Crouser, Joe Kovacs and Darrell Hill – all surpassing 72-06.50 (22.11m), three of the world’s top five men’s shot putters this year are Americans.
