GRAND FORKS, N.D. (Valley News Live) -- Despite not playing last weekend the University of North Dakota Football team improved in both national polls to No. 22.
The Fighting Hawks are back to work this week preparing for No. 3 Weber State.
After beating Montana State two weeks ago the Fighting Hawks improved to 4-0 at home, however, UND has been a different team away from the Alerus Center going just 1-3.
Head Coach Bubba Schweigert speaking Monday at his weekly press conference said the game against the Wildcats is being looked at like an opportunity to make a statement to the playoff committee.
"With their recent history they're a very good football program," Schweigert said. "They were in the semifinals, they were in the quarterfinals and they've done a really good job with their team. So this is a really big opportunity for us to go out and compete against one of the best in the country."
If the Fighting Hawks can pick up the win Saturday it will be their fourth win over a ranked team this season.
Schweigert said he watched the Wildcats win over Sacramento State this past weekend in order to get a feel for how they play in real time.
Two of his takeaways from the game were how physical the Wildcats played and how explosive their offense is.
"You've really got to control their running game and somehow, maybe to shut it down completely is a bit unrealistic, but they have three guys that they rotate in there at running back that are very capable," Schweigert said.
