North Dakota State defensive end Derrek Tuszka was one of 16 players added to the STATS FCS Buck Buchanan Award watch list Thursday, Nov. 7. The award has been presented annually since 1995 to the top defensive player in the Football Championship Subdivision.

Tuszka, a senior from Warner, S.D., currently ranks fourth in the FCS averaging 1.06 sacks per game and has recorded sacks in six of eight games played this year. His career total of 24.5 sacks ranks seventh all-time at NDSU.

Tuszka has 23 total tackles this season with 11.5 tackles for loss, 8.5 sacks, two pass breakups, one forced fumble and six quarterback hurries. The Bison rank second in the FCS in scoring defense and total defense allowing just 11.7 points and 271.4 yards per game.

NDSU junior linebacker Jabril Cox was named in the preseason to the Buck Buchanan Award watch list after a fourth-place finish in the 2018 award voting. Cox is NDSU's third-leading tackler with 53 total stops including 6.0 tackles for loss, 3.0 sacks, one interception, four pass breakups and three quarterback hurries.

North Dakota State has had eight finalists for the Buck Buchanan Award including defensive end Kyle Emanuel, who won the 2014 award.

A national panel of more than 150 sports information directors, broadcasters, writers and other dignitaries will vote on the award following the regular season. The award is named for the legendary Hall of Fame defensive end who played four seasons at Grambling State.
