HUNSTVILLE, Texas (NDSU Athletics) -- North Dakota State defeated host Sam Houston State 4-1, but dropped a 2-0 decision to Louisiana Tech during the second day of the Bearkat Invitational on Saturday, Feb. 29.
NDSU (6-11) closes out tournament play at 9 a.m. Sunday, March 1, against Louisiana Tech (4-13).
North Dakota State sent 10 batters to the plate in the first inning and scored four times in the first game against Sam Houston State (8-11). Cara Beatty delivered a two-run single, while Avery Wysong and Nicole Licea had two-out RBI singles. Beatty went 3 for 3 with a double and Sam Koehn 2 for 3 to claim five of the seven hits by the Bison.
The Bearkats averted the shutout with Megan McDonald's RBI single in the bottom of the seventh. McDonald had two hits.
Freshman Lainey Lyle (2-3) went the distance to get the complete game win. She scattered six hits, struck out five and walked two. The defense overcame two errors and received an alert play when shortstop Montana DeCamp threw out a baserunner at the plate in the third.
Regan Dunn (2-3) and Darby Fitzpatrick pitched for Sam Houston State with Dunn taking the loss.
Audrey Pickett threw a six-hit shutout as Louisiana Tech scored once in the second as Kailey Anderson doubled home the first run in the second inning, while Meghan Robicheaux had a RBI single to add an insurance run in the sixth.
Kara O'Byrne (0-1) and Paige Vargas pitched for North Dakota State with O'Byrne taking the loss. The pair combined to walk six, allow five hits and strike out three. DeCamp led the Bison with two hits and Lauren Reimers added a double.
