FARGO, N.D. (NDSU Athletics) – North Dakota State rallied from a large third set deficit to defeat Purdue Fort Wayne 3-0 (27-25, 25-19, 27-25) to snap a five-match losing streak in a Summit League match played Friday, Oct. 4, before 802 spectators in the Bentson Bunker Fieldhouse.
The Bison (6-9, 1-2 SL) are scheduled to host Western Illinois (4-12, 1-2 SL) at 1 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 6, in the Bentson Bunker Fieldhouse. The Leathernecks lost 3-1 to North Dakota on Friday.
Alexis Bachmeier delivered eight of her match-high 16 kills in the third and deciding set as NDSU trailed by as many as seven points early and were down 23-21 late. The set was tied 25-all following a kill from Purdue Fort Wayne's Madelyn Wurster, but the Bison took advantage of two errors to take the set and match.
The third set was tied nine times with three lead changes as the Bison charged back behind kills from Allie Mauch, Kalli Hegerle, Emily Halverson, Bella Lien and Syra Tanchin. Bachmeier ripped off five straight kills during one stretch. Defense was important too with Kaylee Hanger, Abbi Klos and Kelley Johnson coming up with alert digs, while Halverson, Lien and Bachmeier jammed the Mastodons at the net.
Bachmeier finished with 16 digs to go along with the 16 kills. Hegerle flirted with her fifth 'triple-double' of the season with 22 assists, 11 digs and eight kills. Hanger claimed 12 digs, Lien claimed four blocks, and Bachmeier and Halverson each added three blocks.
Katie Crowe led Purdue Fort Wayne (8-9, 2-1 SL) with 14 kills and Madison Gates finished with 32 assists. Sidney Schiller came up with 12 digs and a pair of aces, while Sandra Hoevels and Sydney Boerst both added three blocks.
NDSU outhit Purdue Fort Wayne .198 to .104 and held a 7-5 edge in team blocks.
