MACOMB, Ill. (NDSU Athletics) -- North Dakota State held off Western Illinois 10-7 in the first game, then the Bison rallied for a 5-4 win over the Leathernecks in the second to sweep a Summit League doubleheader played Sunday, March 30, at Mary Ellen McKee Stadium. NDSU has won 14 straight games.
North Dakota State (24-11, 6-0 SL) is scheduled to compete at the Seattle University Round Robin tournament on April 5-7.
Lauren Reimers hit her first collegiate home run, a shot to right center, with one out in the top of the seventh to put the Bison ahead 4-3. Katie Shoultz scored on a passed ball to provide an insurance run.
Maddie Hansen put a charge into the Bison offense with a three-run home run in the top of the fifth to tie things up at 3-all. It was the seventh home run of the season for Hansen.
Western Illinois (8-17, 1-5 SL) rode the momentum from game one. Sydney Hollings hit a two-run double in the bottom of the first inning to put the Leathernecks up 2-0. Meghan Henson added a RBI double in the second to make it 3-0.
KK Leddy (13-6) worked the final 5.2 innings in relief of starter to pick up her second win of the series. Leddy struck out three and walked one. Abby Carlin took the loss for Western Illinois. Carlin struck out three and walked one.
Montana DeCamp led the Bison with two hits. Payton Abbott and Hollings both had two hits for the Leathernecks.
In the opener, North Dakota State cashed in on a pair of errors to take a 1-0 lead in the first. Western Illinois (8-16, 1-4 SL) tied the game in the bottom of the first on Sydney Hollings solo home run.
The Bison took the lead back in the top of the second. Shoultz drilled a RBI double down the left field line with two outs and Zoe Stavrou hit a three-run home run to center to take a 5-1 lead. It was the first home run of the season for Stavrou.
NDSU made it 6-2 on a Shoultz single to center in the third and Vanessa Anderson's three-run blast to right field extended the lead to 9-2 in the fourth. It was the sixth home run of the season for Anderson. The Bison added another run in the top of the fifth on a Stavrou two-out single up the middle.
Western Illinois made things interesting in the bottom of the seventh, scoring four times. Hailey Duwa knocked in two runs, while Payton Abbott and Danielle Olson both drove in one. Duwa led the Leathernecks with three hits, while Hollings and Olson each had two.
North Dakota State had 14 hits led by Stavrou's 3-for-4 effort at the plate that included four RBI and two runs scored. Shoultz and Anderson both had two hits.
Paige Vargas (9-4) worked the first six-plus innings with seven strikeouts and a walk to pick up the win. Leddy recorded her third save of the season, getting the final three outs. Savannah Rodriguez picked up the loss.
