MSUM women extend winning streak

MOORHEAD, Minn (MSUM Athletics) -- The Minnesota State University Moorhead women's basketball team stretched its winning streak to eight games with 60-51 win over Northern State in action Wednesday at Memorial Auditorium in Moorhead, Minn.

MSUM is now 10-2 overall and 6-0 in the NSIC while Northern State fell to 4-7 overall and 2-4 in the league. The Dragons swept the season series with Wednesday's win.

Senior guard Jacky Volkert led MSUM with 18 points and five assists. She was a perfect 6-of-6 at the line. Redshirt freshman forward Peyton Boom had 10 points and five rebounds while junior forward Megan Hintz had 10 rebounds.

The Dragons shot 43.1 percent (22-of-51) from the field compared to 39.6 percent (21-of-53) for the Wolves. MSUM had a slight 35-29 edge in rebounds.

MSUM started strong on the defensive end, holding the Wolves to one field goal and three points in the opening quarter on its way to an 11-3 advantage.

A layup by sophomore guard Kiley Borowicz with 5:44 left in the half pushed the MSUM advantage to 21-5. The Dragons led 29-18 at the break.

The Wolves cut the lead to 33-28 midway through the third quarter but the Dragons responded with a 12-4 run to close the frame — capped off by a Volkert basket — to extend the lead back to 45-32. The Wolves never got closer than eight the rest of the way.

Borowicz had nine points for MSUM while freshman guard Nicole Herbranson had five points off the bench.

MSUM is off until Jan. 4 when it goes on the road to face Winona State.

Steve d'Eustachio Stat of the Game: The Dragons just completed their second undefeated December in the past three seasons. The 2016-17 squad went 7-0 while this year's team just completed a 6-0 month. The Dragons are 18-2 in this stretch.
