MSUM Women fall in NSIC Championship game to Minnesota Duluth

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (MSUM Athletics) -- The Minnesota State University Moorhead women's basketball team fell short to Minnesota Duluth in the NSIC/Sanford Health Tournament Championship game on Tuesday night, 52-48. Senior guard Jacky Volkert and junior forward Megan Hintz named to the All-Tournament team.

MSUM falls to 26-7 overall.

Hintz led the team with 16 points and contributed five rebounds. Junior forward Madi Green recorded 13 points and tied a career-high with 12 rebounds. Sophomore guard Lauren Fech had seven points on the night. Volkert had seven rebounds to go along with three assists.

MSUM shot 33.3 percent (20-of-60) from the field compared to 36.2 percent (21-of-58) for UMD. The Dragons outrebounded the Bulldogs 39-35.
"It was a very physical basketball game, and I thought both teams played pretty hard," said Head Coach Karla Nelson. "This team can certainly compete, and we can play better."

Hintz got on the board first to put the Dragons up 2-0 early in the first quarter. It would be a Hintz layup again as MSUM took a 6-4 lead with 5:39 remaining in the quarter. The Bulldogs would go on a seven-point run to take an 11-6 lead with just over one minute on the clock. A jumper from Green cut the lead, and she would hit a three at the buzzer to tie the score 11-11 going into the second quarter.

It was all defense early in the second quarter before a layup from Fech brought the Dragon lead to 13-11 with eight minutes to go. UMD would answer with a jumper before a layup from Hintz gave MSUM a 15-13 edge with 6:44 left in the quarter. The Bulldogs would go on a 7-2 run to close out the quarter and led 23-19 going into the break.

Freshman guard Nicole Herbranson opened the third quarter with a three-pointer to cut the Bulldog lead to 23-22. With 7:40 on the clock Hintz would drop in a layup to tie things up 26-26. Fech ended a UMD run with a three as MSUM trailed 34-31 with just over two minutes to go in the quarter. Freshman Peyton Boom hit two free-throws, and Fech nailed a jumper as the Dragons would go into the final quarter trailing 36-35.

The teams traded points early in the fourth quarter before a layup from Green gave MSUM the 41-40 lead with under five minutes to go. Sophomore guard Kiley Borowicz nailed a three with 1:42 remaining to give the Dragons a 48-47 edge. UMD would respond with a jumper and free-throw to reclaim the lead. The final minute was a defensive battle before the Bulldogs would hit two free-throws to lead 52-48 with :01 on the clock. MSUM could not muster a comeback and fell 52-48.

The Dragons now await their NCAA Tournament placement. The field will be announced Sunday March 10th at 9 p.m. Central time. There will be a viewing party at Buffalo Wild Wings in Moorhead.
