GRAND FORKS, N.D. (UND Athletics) -- Jordan Kawaguchi's overtime goal secured North Dakota's first conference sweep of the season as UND downed Colorado College, 3-2, Saturday at Ralph Engelstad Arena in NCHC play.
Hayden Shaw scored his first goal of the season just 1:18 into the game, taking a feed from Jordan Kawaguchi and sniping a shot past Alex Leclerc for a very early 1-0 advantage.
Junior Dixon Bowen also got his first of the season later in that period, tracking down a nice clear of the puck out of the CC zone, going in all alone on Leclerc and beating him gloveside for 2-0 lead for the home squad.
The Tigers would rally in the second, getting a short-hander themselves and having two other potential goals waved off. The first came when Westin Michaud scored on an empty net off a rebound but Adam Scheel was impeded on the play and it was ruled no goal.
At the end of the period, CC wasn't able to beat the clock at zero and the game went to the second intermission with North Dakota up, 2-1.
CC's Trey Bradley tied it at the 7:21 mark of the third and the game went to overtime for the second consecutive night. This time, Kawaguchi was the hero, as he cashed in the loose change in front, sending the 11,720 fans in attendance to the exits in good spirits.
North Dakota (11-9-1, 5-5-0 NCHC) heads to Omaha next weekend for a series with the Mavericks.
*UND's last sweep of an opponent with both wins coming in overtime came in 1969 as North Dakota defeated Denver, 3-2 and 2-1 on Dec. 19-20.
*North Dakota is 7-0-1 when leading after two periods.
