Griesel Selected to German U20 National Team for European Championships

FARGO, N.D. (NDSU Athletics) -- North Dakota State rising sophomore Sam Griesel has been officially named to Germany’s men’s basketball team for the upcoming European U20 Championships in Tel Aviv, Israel.

Griesel was selected to the 12-man roster Monday, July 8. He has spent the past four weeks training with the German team and playing exhibition games in Italy and Spain in preparation for the European Championships.

Germany opens group play at the 16-team tournament with games against Latvia on July 13, Croatia on July 14, and Spain on July 15. Single-elimination tournament play begins on Wednesday, July 17, and concludes with the championship and third-place games on Sunday, July 21.

All games of the European Championships will be broadcast live for free at YouTube.com/FIBA.

Griesel played in 24 games and made 22 starts for NDSU as a true freshman in the 2018-19 season. He averaged 6.1 points and 3.8 rebounds per game, scoring a season-high 20 points in NDSU’s win over Western Illinois in the semifinals of the Summit League Tournament.

Sam’s father, Achim, was born and raised in Germany.
