GRAND FORKS, N.D. (Valley News Live) -- The Fighting Hawks football team is a few days into fall camp as an independent member of the FCS.
UND will join the Missouri Valley Football Conference in 2020. Until then the Hawks will play a Big Sky schedule without the ability to earn the conference’s auto bid into the FCS Playoffs, placing more importance on every game.
Head Coach Bubba Schweigert said the first few days of practice are important for the 30 newcomers to his squad. He hopes the new faces will be able to learn from his veterans.
"Our senior class is a small senior class but they've got to set a good example and obviously the upper classmen, juniors, sophomores, the guys that have been here before, know how to do things and the new guys got to join right in,” Schweigert said Sunday.
“But we've been happy with our energy and excitement to be out here."
Just 15 seniors are listed on the Fighting Hawks fall camp roster. One of those is cornerback Deion Harris. Harris returns for his redshirt senior season after missing all of 2017 due to an injury suffered in fall camp last year.
UND opens the 2018 season August 30 against Mississippi Valley State at the Alerus Center in Grand Forks.
