Dragon Men Edge Northern State in Thriller

MOORHEAD, Minn. (MSUM Athletics) – The Minnesota State University Moorhead men's basketball team
defeated Northern State University on Wednesday night, 71-69. Three Dragons scored in double figures , including freshman guard Gavin Baumgartner who contributed 10 points in the second half and 18 overall.

MSUM improves to 9-5 overall and 3-3 in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference, while Northern State drops to 9-3 overall and 5-1 in the NSIC.

Senior forward Addison Park led the Dragons with 19 points, and Baumgartner followed with 18 points and a team-best eight rebounds. Freshman guard Siman Sem had 10 points and one steal. Freshman center Jesse Bergh and senior guard Travaun Coad each had two steals on the night.

MSUM shot 48.3 percent (29-of-60) from the field while NSU shot 50.9 percent (28-of-55). Northern State held a 37-23 rebound edge. The Dragons had 17 points off turnovers compared to seven from Northern State.

MSUM had a 12-11 lead at the 12:03 mark in the first half off a Park three-pointer. The Dragons remained in control through the first half and held a 38-29 lead going into halftime. Northern State had nine turnovers in the first half, and the Dragons recorded four steals.

Northern State chipped away at the MSUM lead and trailed 45-43 at the 15:08 mark. Two good free-throws from Park gave the Dragons a 47-43 lead with 14:40 remaining. NSU continued to pull within reach of the Dragons and brought the score to 69-67 with :14 on the clock.

Baumgartner sunk two free-throws to give MSUM a 71-67 edge, but the Wolves continued to fight and brought the score to 71-69 with :04 remaining. A three-point attempt from Northern State at the buzzer was no good, and the Dragons captured a 71-69 victory in dramatic fashion.

The next games for the Dragons will be on the road Jan. 4 at Winona State at 7:30 p.m. and Jan. 5 at Upper Iowa at 5:30 p.m.
