DULUTH, Minn. (MSUM Athletics) -- The Minnesota State University Moorhead men's basketball team defeated the University of Minnesota Duluth by a score of 79-58 on Friday night in Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference action.
MSUM improves to 15-6 overall and 9-5 in the NSIC while UMD falls to 10-7 overall and 7-6 in the NSIC.
Senior guard Addison Park led the team with 22 points to go along with six rebounds. Senior guard Travaun Coad had 20 points and a team-best eight rebounds. Junior guard Johnny Beeninga recorded 16 points and three assists.
The Dragons shot 50.0% (33-of-66) from the field compared to 35.5 percent (22-of-62) from the Bulldogs. The Dragons outrebounded the Bulldogs 43-38.
MSUM immediately jumped out to a 12-0 lead with 16:37 on the clock. Coad and Beeninga each had four points during the run. The Dragons continued to hold a commanding lead and went up 27-15 with seven minutes remaining in the first half. MSUM saw their largest lead of the half after a jumper from Park brought the score to 38-22 with two minutes remaining. MSUM went into the break with a 38-27 edge. Coad had 11 points and five rebounds in the first half.
MSUM opened the second half with a seven-point run that was capped by a three pointer from Park to give the Dragons a 45-27 lead. With 12:05 on the clock Park hit another three pointer to give MSUM an impressive 58-37 lead. With just over four minutes to go, MSUM captured their largest laed of the night at 74-48. The Bulldogs could not dig themselves out of the hole, and MSUM earned the 79-58 victory. Park had 18 of his 22 points in the second half.
MSUM is back in action at St. Cloud State on Saturday at 5:30 p.m.
