Bison name backup quarterback

FARGO, N.D. (Valley News Live) -- With the release of the depth chart for week one, the Bison football team has named a backup quarterback for four-year starter Easton Stick.

"Holden [Hotchkiss] has earned that right to be the backup right now," said head coach Chris Klieman Monday.

Hotchkiss, a redshirt freshman out of Lakeland, Florida earned the spot over fellow redshirt freshman Noah Sanders and true freshman Trey Lance.

"We'll still continue to evaluate that position as we move forward with Noah and Trey because they've done some really nice things."

With 25 seniors and 13 returning full-time starters, experience and depth are plentiful across the Bison roster but backup quarterback was a major question mark for the team.

Last year they flirted with trouble after backup Cole Davis suffered an early injury. Team utility player James Hendricks served as backup and still continues to take reps during practice. Just in case.

This year, it looks like the Bison may stick to the quarterback's room. Klieman praising Hotchkiss for his body of work throughout the month of August.

"He's done a really nice job of managing the team and understanding our scheme and doing what is asked of him to be successful and so he'll go in to the game as the backup."
