FARGO, N.D. (Valley News Live) -- North Dakota State started the second week of Spring practice by putting pads on for the first time.
Before Spring practice began, Head Coach Matt Entz said one of the things he and his staff will focus on more this Spring than in the past is tackling.
So NDSU went two practices in shorts and helmets before putting full pads on Monday.
But it's not just the defense that benefits from wearing pads.
On the offensive side, Offensive Coordinator Tyler Roehl, said the idea for putting on pads this early isn't anything new, noting back to his playing days at NDSU, that the mindset has always been the same, to be the most physical offense in the country.
"To play with just helmets on that's not our m.o. So we need to play with pads on and to see the guys get the pads on again," Roehl said after Monday's practice. "I mean its been a couple months now, I think they were all ready, we were all ready as coaches, and its great to see those guys flying out there with pads on."
