CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas (NDSU Athletics) – Jared Samuelson scored 15 points on five three-pointers to lead the North Dakota State men’s basketball team to a 76-70 victory over UT Rio Grande Valley on Friday evening at the Islander Invitational.
NDSU (3-1) made 12-of-29 (41 percent) from beyond the arc in the game. Senior Vinnie Shahid had 12 points, eight rebounds and five assists for the Bison, and Tyson Ward added 11 points and nine boards.
UTRGV (1-2) was led by 29 points from senior guard Jordan Jackson.
Cameron Hunter and Rocky Kreuser both scored nine points for NDSU. The Bison posted a commanding 43-31 rebounding advantage.
The Bison led for nearly 30 of the 40 minutes in the game. NDSU went up 11 at 60-49 following a three-point play by Ward with 8:53 remaining. The Vaqueros pulled within four at 71-67 with 1:53 left, but the Bison made 5-of-6 free throws down the stretch to seal the victory.
NDSU will take on host Texas A&M-Corpus Christi at 6:30 p.m. Saturday.
