FARGO, N.D. (NDSU Athletics) -- The North Dakota State baseball team scored a season-high 20 runs Saturday night in a 20-7 victory over the Purdue Fort Wayne Mastodons. It was the most runs the Bison have ever scored against an NCAA Division I team and the most runs scored in 11 years.
With the victory, the Bison improved to 17-22 overall and 13-13 in Summit League play. The Mastodons dropped to 6-41 overall and 1-25 in league play. The series finale is scheduled for Noon on Sunday, May 12 at Newman Outdoor Field in Fargo.
The Bison scored in all six innings that they batted, including seven runs in both the second and sixth innings. After scoring two runs in the top of the first inning, the Mastodons scored five in the top of the fourth to cut the lead to 10-7 before NDSU answered in the final three at-bats.
Carter Thompson was 4-for-4 off the bench with four RBI, while Bennett Hostetler, Peter Brookshaw and Tucker Rohde each had two hits. Hostetler drove in three runs, while Brookshaw and Brock Anderson each brought in a pair. Hostetler, Brookshaw, Anderson, Rohde and Jake Malec all scored three times. Hostetler hit his second home run of the series and fifth of the season, while Brookshaw had a pair of doubles. Thompson and Rohde each had a triple.
Ben Smith improved to 4-2 on the mound, picking up the win in six innings of work. Smith gave up seven runs on nine hits and a walk, while striking out five. Gabe Pilla tossed the seventh inning, striking out two while allowing a walk and a hit.
