SAC4RAMENTO, Calif. (NDSU Athletics) -- The North Dakota State men’s track & field team added a pair of qualifiers for the NCAA Outdoor Championships on Friday at the West Preliminary Rounds. Senior Payton Otterdahl and redshirt freshman Brendan Artley earned bids to the national meet by finishing in the top 12 of their events.
Otterdahl placed second in the discus at the West Prelims with a throw of 195-7 (59.61m), locking up his second straight bid to the NCAA Championships in the event. The two-time indoor national champion will try to add a second berth in the shot put Saturday.
Artley finished 12th in the javelin with a throw of 221-0 (67.36m) to take the final qualifying spot, earning a trip to the national meet as only a redshirt freshman. He is the fifth NCAA Championships javelin qualifier in the past five years for the Bison men.
The top 12 finishers in each event at the Preliminary Rounds advance to the NCAA Championships in Austin, Texas, on June 5-8. With sophomore Alex Talley qualifying in the hammer throw on Thursday, the Bison men have now secured three bids to the national meet.
NDSU redshirt freshman Benji Phillips threw a personal-best 211-7 (64.49m) in the javelin. He entered the meet ranked 33rd in the West, but finished 23rd with his new PR. Phillips was the only thrower in the field of 48 athletes to register a personal best on Friday.
Bison senior J.T. Butler placed 39th in the 200m dash, finishing in 21.32. He ends his career ranked fourth all-time at NDSU in the 200m.
NDSU has six men scheduled to compete on Saturday at the West Prelims – Otterdahl, Talley, Kristoffer Thomsen and Michael Keogan in the shot put, Marcus Walton in the high jump, and Kelle’Mon Hinton in the triple jump.
