DETROIT LAKES, Minn. (Valley News Live)- A startling situation for a Minneapolis woman who ended up in Big Detroit Lake after a wave caused her kayak to capsize.
It happened Tuesday evening around 4:30. Deputies with the Becker County Sheriff’s Department say Veronica Surges, 34, was kayaking on the lake when a wave flipped her over. She lost her paddle and couldn’t get it back because of the strong wind. Surges told deputies she tried hanging onto the kayak but the wind carried them apart. That’s when she tried swimming to shore.
Fortunately, Surges was wearing a life jacket along with a layered wet suit. She was treated at a local hospital and later released.
