Two teenagers purchased fireworks on Monday afternoon, and the explosives ended up going off before they even got out of the vehicle.

The North Dakota Highway Patrol says it was just after 8:30 p.m. when two troopers responded to a vehicle fire on northbound Interstate-29, just south of 52nd Avenue South.

Witnesses reported fireworks going off inside of a vehicle. Fargo fire fighters extinguished the fire and two people inside were taken to Essentia Hospital.

The 17-year-old driver was not injured. The 18-year-old passenger suffered second and third degree burns to his body.

The teens say they had just purchased fireworks at a business south of Fargo. While driving back to Fargo, the passenger was igniting a cap gun, which sparked and set off the firework.

Both teens are from Fargo.
