Security issue at Detroit Lakes hospital facility, misunderstanding

DETROIT LAKES, Minn. (Valley News Live) 7AM UPDATE: Detroit Lakes Police tell Valley News Live that through their investigation into this incident, they found that the incident was a misunderstanding.

Officials tell us that a neighboring agency called in saying that a man was possibly headed to Essentia.

Officials also say that there was no gun threat.

At this time, they are not looking for any suspects, and there is no threat to the public.

Essentia took the necessary precautions for the safety of their patients. They are no longer under a lockdown.

2 a.m. UPDATE: Valley News Live is following breaking news on a security issue at Essentia St. Mary's in Detroit Lakes.

Our reporter on the scene spoke with a man who says he was a visitor in the hospital late Wednesday night and was not allowed to leave until early this morning because of a lockdown at the facility. He told Valley News Live that staff members told him there was apparently a threat involving a gun on the nursing home side of the facility, and that the entire campus had to be locked down. Police and Essentia officials are not confirming this information, and there's no word on any injuries or arrests.

A spokeswoman for Essentia St. Mary's does tell Valley News Live that they are currently taking extra precautions to ensure patient and resident safety at the Detroit Lakes Hospital campus. The Emergency Room remains open for patient care.

ORIGINAL STORY: There's breaking news this Thursday morning out of Detroit Lakes, after some sort of security issue at the hospital there.

A spokeswoman for Essentia St. Mary's tells Valley News Live that they are currently taking extra precautions to ensure patient and resident safety at the Detroit Lakes Hospital campus. The Emergency Room remains open for patient care.

No other details are being released at this time, including what prompted the extra precautions. Our crew on the scene at 1:30 a.m. reports there are law enforcement vehicles outside of the hospital, which is located on Washington Avenue.
