Recycling incorrectly could end up costing you
Plastic, paper, metal, and even glass can all be recycled. However, people are making some vital mistakes as they throw practically everything into recycling bins.
"We get a lot of lawn chairs and a lot of swimming pools, and those are not acceptable items," said Mary Aldrich, MinnKota Recycling Sales Manager.
Aldrich says she sees everything from toys to snow sleds, but recycling properly isn't just for convenience, it keeps workers safe.
"We actually have guys out there, grabbing materials and placing them into the bins below," Aldrich said. "We want to make sure it's always materials that are safe and acceptable."
It also impacts you. When companies have to spend more resources sorting out what can’t be recycled, you end up paying for it.
"If you don't recycle the right items, you're going to create a lot of problems for the folks at our facility, and then also for you ultimately because it's going to drive the cost up," Aldrich said.
They want you to recycle, but she says you should also educate yourself on what is allowed.
"The most challenging, I think, that people have for recycling is plastics. The materials we can accept here are 1, 2 and 5’s containers, plastics that are bottles, jugs, and tubs."
Aldrich says when in doubt to actually throw it out.
