UPDATE (2:40 PM) - Fire crews have put out a massive fire on a railroad bridge in Grand Forks.

Around 6:00AM Friday morning the Grand Forks Fire Department responded to several reports that the railroad bridge downtown at 87 South 3rd Street was fully engulfed in flames.

When crews arrived on the scene, they saw heavy smoke and flames surrounding the bridge.

Officials say some damage was sustained to the bridge and support structures.

Burlington Northern Santa Fe crews will begin repairing the bridge this weekend. BNSF will also repair any damage caused by the heavy equipment to the trail system.

Fire crews will remain on scene to look for hot spots.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.

A Firefighter was treated and released from Altru Hospital for a hand injury sustained during the incident.

BNSF crews will soon be bringing in large equipment to repair the bridge. This equipment will access the Greenway by the Point Bridge then work their way to the railroad bridge.

Greenway users are asked to be aware of the heavy equipment that will be in the area during the repairs.
