NBC - Providing supervised access to heroin for people addicted to the drug could reduce the risk of fatal overdoses.

That's according to a new report from the Rand Corporation.

It claims that safe heroin injection sites have been successful in other countries and should be tested in the U.S.

These facilities provide a sterile environment to consume street drugs -or medical grade heroin under the eyes of trained staff.

Researchers say these sites can lower the risk of overdose and reduce the spread of disease.
