MOORHEAD, Minn. (Valley News Live) -- A convicted felon was taken into custody Thursday night. He's wanted by federal authorities and barricaded himself inside an apartment in Moorhead for hours.

The man's name is Miguel Cooley, Jr. He prompted authorities to set up a perimeter near Romkey Park in south Moorhead.

It started around 12:30 p.m. Thursday when Moorhead officers were investigating a suspicious male call near MSUM. One of the callers described the suspect as 20-year-old Miguel Cooley, Jr. Officers recognized the name as someone they had been looking for outstanding warrants.

When they tried to make contact, Cooley barricaded himself in a relative's apartment. Moorhead police, U.S. Marshals, the Clay County Sheriffs Office and the Metro Street Crimes Unit made several attempts to get Cooley out.

Authorities broke in and got a woman and infant out of the apartment. They started shooting pepper balls into the bedroom Cooley was in.

Cooley finally gave in around 2:30 p.m. Thursday. The suspect was identified as 20-year-old Miguel Jay Cooley, Jr. from Moorhead.

He was taken to Essentia Hospital for medical clearance after the pepper balls.

Authorities say Cooley was taken to the Cass County Jail. He's being held on his outstanding warrants of a felon in possession of a handgun and possession of a stolen firearm.
