MINOT, N.D. (KFYR) A Lansford man faces a B-felony charge of child abuse on accusations he punched a crying infant in the head in January.
According to a criminal affidavit, Minot Police investigators received a report of an 11-month-old child that was treated at Trinity ER on Jan. 25 for bruising on the left side of her face.
The victim’s mother told investigators she returned home from work to find the child injured, and 29-year-old Derrick McLean would have been watching the child while she was gone.
The mother said, at first, McLean said he didn’t know what happened, but later admitted to punching the child in the head out of frustration.
McLean later told investigators he had punched the victim with a closed fist out of frustration, after she would not stop crying.
McLean made his initial appearance on the charge Wednesday. He will be back in court for his arraignment Nov. 15.
The charge is abuse of a child under the age of six, which carries with it a maximum sentence of 10 years in prison.
