MN candidate receives mail containing unknown substance

BELTRAMI COUNTY, Minn. (Valley News Live) The Beltrami County, MN, sheriff's office is investigating a suspicious piece of mail received by a candidate for the Leech Lake Band of Ojibwe Council.

Officials say 71-year-old Donald J. Finn of Cass Lake received a piece of mail Monday that contained a threatening message and a powder substance. The Beltrami County Sheriff’s Office and the FBI are investigating.

The Minnesota Chemical Assessment Team is trying to determine what the substance is, but Finn says neither he nor his family members reported any ill effects.

He's a candidate for the Office of Secretary/Treasurer for the Leech Lake Band of Ojibwe and told police felt that the suspicious mail was related to his candidacy.

The item was sent to the Minnesota Department of Health for analysis.
