Grand Forks man sentenced to prison for sexually assaulting girl
A Grand Forks man is serving time in prison for sexually assaulting a child.
Derek James Mortrud, 33, was sentenced to two years in prison on Monday at Grand Forks County District Court.
He pleaded guilty to a charge of solicitation of a minor, according to court documents.
Mortrud was originally charged with Gross Sexual Imposition of a victim under the age of 15, but the charge was reduced to solicitation after his guilty plea.
In December of 2017, the young girl’s brother made at an outcry at a Grand Forks school that his sister was being sexually assaulted.
The girl then admitted to Grand Forks detectives that Mortrud sexually abused her, according to court documents.
Mortrud will have to serve five years of probation upon his release from prison.
