Grand Forks, ND--- Last night at 10:05 pm the Grand Forks Fire Department responded to a report of smoke in the 600 block of N 5th St. A short search revealed a garage located at 618 N 5th St. was found to be on fire.
Fire crews made entry to the garage and quickly brought the fire under control and extinguished it. Damage is estimated at $10,000 to the structure and contents.
The fire investigation revealed that the block heater electrical cord failed and caused combustible materials in the area to ignite. The fire will be listed as accidental.
The Grand Forks Fire Department urges residents to follow these fire safety tips;
- Replace or repair damaged electrical cords.
- Have electrical circuits or outlets added by a qualified electrician.
- Follow the manufacturer's instructions on extension cords
- If outlets or switches feel warm or experience flickering or dimming lights, please call a qualified electrician.
