FARGO, N.D. - (Valley News Live) Giving Hearts Day 2020 has broken records.
This 24-hour event is big for almost 500 charities across North Dakota and northwestern Minnesota.
Last year, the event raised just under $16.3 million. That was the record to date. Last years' record fell before the night was over. The total money raised surpassed the 16 million mark at around 8 P.M. on Thursday.
This is the 13th year of the event and the goal is not to only help the charities, by matching some of the money donated but to raise the awareness of many charities and get people to dig deep and give to them.
"We do have needs of people that don't get met," said Pat Traynor, executive director of the Dakota Medical Foundation. "That's where these charities step in and say 'Look, we can help. We can help provide the greatest quality of life in the world right here in North Dakota and northwest Minnesota'.
If we get hundreds of thousands of people giving on Giving Hearts Day, can you imagine the quality of life in North Dakota and Minnesota? I mean it's unstoppable. It's unfathomable."
