Fire damages Fargo senior living building

FARGO, ND (Valley News Live) - A natural gas meter has caused damage to the Riverview Apartment Complex in Fargo.

Fargo firefighters responded to the senior living apartment building at 5300 12th Street South in Fargo Friday, January 4th around 6:00 p.m. after reports of a strong gas odor. When crews arrived, they were notified by a Riverview employee that there were flames coming from the mechanical room.

Fire crews then forced entry into the building and began attacking the fire. The main body of the fire was located in the courtyard near the natural gas meter. The flames had extended into the exterior walls and the attic. Fire crews extinguished the interior and exterior fires but were unable to put out the fire located near the natural gas meter until they cut off the gas supply.

The fire forced the evacuation of 24 unites, and all residents were able to get out safely. The cause of the fire is still under investigation, and there were no injuries.

The Fargo Fire Department responded with 22 personnel on five engines, one truck, and two command vehicles. The Fargo Police Department, FM Ambulance, Salvation Army, Red Cross and staff from the Riverview Complex also assisted.
