Father arrested after he reportedly admits to shaking his 4 month old infant

TOWNER COUNTY, ND (Valley News Live) A Towner County father has been arrested and charged with felony child abuse after authorities respond to a medical assist call.

The call went out on Tuesday at 3:40 p.m. at an apartment on Main Street in Cando, North Dakota for a four month old infant who was having trouble breathing.

When paramedics arrived they transported the baby to the Towner County Medical Center. After an initial exam by hospital staff, suspicious bruising was observed on the baby’s face and neck. The child was then transferred to Fargo and later to a children’s hospital in Minneapolis.

The parents were interviewed and that’s when officials say the father Tristian Assels admitted to shaking the baby multiple times. Assels was arrested for a Class B Felony and if convicted he could face up to 10 years in prison and / or a $20,000 fine.

Assels is being held in the Devils Lake Correctional Center with a $20,000 cash bond.

The baby is said to be in stable condition and will be released into the custody of social services. Another toddler is currently in the custody of social services.
