Emineth quits North Dakota Senate race, says he expects Cramer to challenge Heitkamp

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — A Republican candidate for North Dakota's U.S. Senate seat says he's quitting the race because he expects GOP Rep. Kevin Cramer to challenge Democratic Sen. Heidi Heitkamp after all.

Gary Emineth said Tuesday he's talked with Cramer several times in the past week and expects him to enter the race.

Cramer announced in January that he wouldn't run for the Senate, despite a personal appeal from President Donald Trump. Emineth, who ran Cramer's congressional campaign in 2012, said Cramer has been getting pressure from party faithful to run for the seat.

Cramer did not immediately respond to calls Tuesday.

Emineth's departure leaves state Sen. Tom Campbell as the only major GOP challenger to Heitkamp.
