DETROIT LAKES, MINN. (Valley News Live)- A pastor at First Lutheran Church in Detroit Lakes has resigned after criminal charges were filed against him in connection to some stolen liquor and a keyed vehicle.

39-year-old John Simonson has been charged with two misdemeanors -- one for damage to property and the other for theft.

Court documents say surveillance video at the Detroit Lakes Liquor Store caught Simonson taking an unknown number of shooters, putting them in his pocket, and leaving the store without paying for them in December of 2018.

Simonson also allegedly keyed someone's vehicle after having a verbal altercation with them in the liquor store.

Surveillance video shows Simonson reaching towards a vehicles side front and rear door area with a shiny object and swiping down. About $600 worth of damages was done to the vehicle.

Simonson admitted to damaging the vehicle and is expected to be in court in May.
