Deputies reminding people to stay off the ice after nearly a dozen stranded people rescued from lake
Nearly a dozen people had to be rescued from Upper Red lake Tuesday after deputies say they got stranded on some ice.
Deputies say it happened after people fishing on the lake ended up stranded following strong winds that caused the ice to separate from the shore.
11 people were rescued by a fire and rescue team, there are also reports of many others being rescued by area resorts. Deputies say they were not immediately called about the incident, adding the rescue personnel was contacted directly.
Deputies say early cold weather has resulted in the lake beginning to ice over earlier than usual with a mixed report on the thickness of the ice. Wednesday morning, the Beltrami County Sheriff’s Office contacted the Red Lake area resorts and asked them to not allow fisherman out on the unsafe ice. They say doing so risk’s the lives of their first responder’s.
