College hockey competition rolls into Fargo

FARGO, N.D. (Valley News Live) - A fierce hockey competition rolls into Fargo this week.

The 2018 National Collegiate Roller Hockey Championships will be held at the Southwest Youth Arena from April 11 through April 14.

The championship will bring more than a thousand people—between players, coaches and fans—visiting the Valley over the next few days.

It started with just five organizations back in 1998. Now the National Collegiate Roller Hockey Association has more than 175 teams and 2,000 players across the nation.

Rob Coggin, the director of league operations for the NCRHA tells us sports tourism is a billion-dollar industry, and Fargo's getting a piece of it.

"Our event brings in about 1200 people for four to five days,” Coggin said. “We're talking an economic impact of about $2 million. It's basically all money going into local businesses. And then obviously that helps the tax base too, so it's a great thing for the community."
